DIY Do's and Don'ts

Many brides want to create the details for their wedding. You can find tons of DIY wedding projects on blogs, Web sites and in books and while they look beautiful they may not be so easy to make. Here are some quick dos and don'ts you should follow if you are considering calling yourself a DIY Bride:

DO give yourself enough time to complete the project - weeks and months if necessary

DO a test run to know exactly how many materials you'll need, how long it will take you and how complicated the project is

DO ask friends and relatives (aka bridesmaids) to help

DON'T forget that time is money so compare the time you'll be spending to complete a project vs. how much it would be in savings. Saving $200 may not be worth three weeks of nights crafting

DON'T be upset with yourself if you can't complete the project

You DON'T have to DIY every element of your wedding just because you think you're a DIY bride. Pick and choose the projects you want to do

Wow, ain't this the truth... I can't tell you how many brides I meet with just before their wedding to go over their details, and they are insanely stressed out about the placecards/favors/ceremony programs/etc that still have to be made.

The last month before a wedding is crazy, so get any DIY project done before then. Or, if you know you don't have the discipline to do that, find someone to do it for you and pay them. It's SO much better than being miserable and stressed out leading up to your wedding!

I agree with that. That's why as one of those DIY brides, I'm trying to start those projects as early as I can (I'm 8.5 months away from the big day) and hope to finish them more than a month before. There's the temptation to say "it's still several months away" but as much as I want to save, I also do not want to be super-stressed out.

In connection to the "time to complete a project vs. amount of savings"... I had planned months ago to make crepe paper flowers for my bouquet, but after seeing artificial flowers (which looked a lot better) at a clearance store, I decided to choose the later. It's just a few dollars difference anyway, and lesser stress for me.

I'm so glad you mentioned doing a trial run for your project. I sat down to make what seemed like simple fans for my beach wedding with the help of one bridesmaid and soon learned that we'd need much more help if they were ever to be completed. If I had done a trial run, I would've left so much more time to finish them and enlisted more help!
